A friend’s close call

I’ve read so many news articles, accounts and blogs on the “Made in China with Melamine” case.  I’ve even received a few emails detailing what other products out there are being checked for melamine contamination. I have to read labels of food products I regularly buy, just in case. But what about those using raw materials which could be contaminated? The labels do not inform us where the raw materials come from. What if? It gave me more shivers especially yesterday when a friend wrote in her Cogito ergo, scrap! blog about her experience when her kids had some stomach problems after eating some biscuits. It’s frightening that things could happen right there at our doorsteps. Just because some unscrupulous businesses are so greedy. They do not know the repercussions of their actions on the innocent. Let’s be vigilant and be aware of what we take in all the time.

The weekend that was …

How was yours? Mine was, as usual, full of activities, movement and color; but there was time, too, for relaxation and savoring the moment of freedom from Mon-Fri stresses. The weekend is usually for doing things which we could not do during the week, when we are at work or at school or other activities related to our professional lives. That is, for us who do not have to work during the weekend. There are others I know who could not enjoy the weekend as some of us due to work commitments, or they just could not say NO. For them, everyday is a working day which might not be good as we need time to rest. Even though we still keep doing activities in the weekend at least they are different from routine, and the break alone is good, especially the change of pace. That includes the change in scenery, such as different views and faces of people J.

So last weekend, despite the enjoyment there were some glitches. One was when we went to the Lifestyles Thailand office at Ocean Tower in Ratchadapisek to pick up our Intra orders. It took longer than usual as there were many people. My husband who was waiting in the car just in front of the office got bullied by the guards. That was terrible especially when one particular guard threatened to hit our car with a gate pole. What was annoying was there were other cars parked there, even much longer than us and why could they? And then there were more cars coming in who were also allowed to stand by. Such arrogance. People in the service industry who do not know how to do service have no right to be in that profession.

Inside the Lifestyles office I was talking to my friend (a kababayan) and she told me that she has actually stopped being in the loop of this MLM business. Like me, she is now just buying the products for her own personal use, and to serve others who order from her. Purely for health reasons, availing of the discount we already have as members. Aside from her lack of time to network with people and potential customers, she said that the “unfriendliness” of the office itself to foreign members discouraged her from actively participating. Oh well … I have experienced this myself several times when I dealt with this company. That is why I would just often order from my upline instead of directly from them. There is too much hassle as probably there are language and cultural barriers. Thai businesses are well-known not to care about customers anyway, as it is in their culture not to complain.

This was the major glitch last weekend. For a while it leaves you seething but what to do in a situation like this? It is safer to just let it be. I believe that when people are so nasty with us and we might not be able to pay them back an eye for an eye, vengeance will come to them somehow. In some future time, in some way, these nasty people will get what they deserve. Not through me, but through others or through life itself. There is a Higher Being who knows all things, sees all things, and judgment will be ultimately His.

So let’s just hang on and enjoy life. It’s too precious and short to be wasted on things that do not matter. And especially the weekend is so precious and short, gotta make use of it well. So that when the new week comes, we can enter it with rejuvenated bodies and renewed spirits, so we can keep going and fulfilling the purpose of living.

A fleeting feeling

I was browsing through the Jester-in-Exile blog when I chanced upon the link to A Slice of Life (Jenny’s blog). What was interesting was that as the banner/header of this blog appeared I just felt like I was in the middle of summer holidays. It was just a fleeting moment but it was a good feeling. It was probably the color combination of the blog’s banner which I associate with summer and all things fun and exciting, going to the beach, playing on the sand, reading under the tree, and just having fun with family and friends. I am just probably missing home, that’s why.

Out of order

I was reading the post, The Senate is “Out of Order” in the stressed in the city blog earlier tonight.  I was reminded of a time many years ago when Key & I were in a restaurant in Ho Chi Minh City. We were trying to order some food and a couple of items we wanted were not available. The waiters told us they were “out of order”. We got a laugh out of that. It was my first time to hear about this. Then some time later, in Bangkok the same thing happened. I was trying to order something and the waitress also told me it was “out of order”. I was surprised, thinking maybe I missed something about the meaning of this phrase. Maybe this is part of the vocabulary among the restaurant service providers? Nobody knows.

Who knows what other words and phrases are being misused nowadays but have become common place or quite accepted…maybe that’s how words and language evolve.

Fun during aerobics

It’s been more than a month now since the semester opened. Since then aerobics classes have also commenced. I have been quite good during the past weeks in attending it. We have classes three days a week, on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays, from 5 to 6 pm. I am trying not to miss any class as I really need the exercise. I find it fun despite the fact that most of the time I am one or two steps slower than the teacher :). Really fun especially when the footwork gets complicated, and the foot and hand coordination gets crazy as well. So there are about as many steps and styles as there are girls in the class. Each one trying to copy our teacher’s actions who makes it looks so easy. But some steps are really hard!

Today I arrived early so I had a chance to talk with our aerobics teacher. I asked her name. Guess what her name is? She is called “EAT”, or it sounds like that. Can you believe that? Here we are supposed to not think about eating, and food. Another funny thing is that while doing aerobics, I could not help smiling because I am thinking of what to prepare for dinner after aerobics. I was mentally trying to make an inventory of my ref contents. Then my tummy starts grumbling, and my mouth becomes dry. I start to feel hungry. Good I have a bottle of water nearby so I can take a sip. It’s good thinking about food does not add kilos.

One hour of aerobics is so good – and only for a 10 – 20 baht donation per time. Dee tee sood!

My bad dream experience …

with my nephew, niece and sis (cottage on top of a hill)

with my nephew, niece and sis (cottage on top of a hill)

Last weekend early morning I woke up from a bad dream. It was bad in a way because in that dream I felt fear. The scene was in one of the bedrooms in the basement of our house in Antique. We were on the bed facing the window and I saw somebody through the glass. I remember every time we slept in our basement we always had this fear of somebody looking in from the outside. It is because the upper half of the room is on the ground, making the window on ground level, and the lower half of the room is in the ground. Although there are metal grills in between each window pane, the thought of somebody intruding into our space and watching us un-noticed is so frightening. So anyway, in this dream I felt the same fear and I suddenly woke up. When I woke up the feeling in the dream was still with me and at first I thought I was really in our house there in Antique. But in fact I was in our small flat in ST6 at AIT. After realizing this, I told myself that here in the flat I was not facing any window similar to our house and so it could not be true that there was somebody as in my dream. But the fear was still there and I thought maybe there was somebody in the room. By that time I was already fully awake and realized that it could not be true! Then the fear was gone. I sat up and prayed for God’s protection and to completely remove any fear or any bad thought from my mind and heart. And then I prayed for everyone at home, especially for my parents who are still staying in our house, and my sister and her family who are living just next door. In fact the window in my dream faces my sister’s house.

Always when I wake up from a bad dream, I would pray, because I know that there is something or someone God wants me to pray for. Usually I would pray for the people present in my dream, or the places or situations that appear in the dream. And in this instance I knew God wanted me to pray for my family. This conviction strengthened when later in the day I got a message from my parents that my nephew who lives next door was rushed to the hospital at around 3 am or so, at the same time that I was having that bad dream. It was raining so hard there. My nephew could not breathe and he said he felt so tired. So they got very nervous and rushed him to the emergency room. Apparently he fell at school and ate some canned goods which triggered an allergy attack, along with too much sweat which dried on him. His bronchial tubes were almost closed that was why he had difficulty breathing. Thank God they were able to bring him quickly to the hospital, which is just nearby, and he was given oxygen ASAP.

Now he is recovering, with still a dextrose attached to him. My Dad said that three men had to hold him down while the dextrose was being attached because he was resisting as he did not want it. Who would? And he was screaming, “Mommy, I do not love you anymore!” The hospital staff were all surprised as he was screaming in English. At least it’s something we can all laugh about now after the storm has passed. We keep praying for his complete recovery.

I wasn’t there to witness it. I wasn’t even able to watch the livestreaming hu hu hu. But thank God for emails,  eposts and blogs, written right after the event. Now we know who the winners are. They entertain, challenge, remind, teach, encourage, make us laugh/cry/react, and many more. One thing is common among them – they never bore. Some of them I’ve read already, some are new to me, to be added to my reading list. Click on the image below to see the list of winners and links to their sites:

Winners of the Philippine Blog Awards 2

I am happy that an entry on Evelio Javier by Jester-in-Exile won the Best Single Post under the Arts & Culture Category. I haven’t seen this musical but just read about it earlier this year, from the Jester-in-Exile blog as well as from other pages on Antique province. As an Antiqueña, I am proud that somehow the province and one of her most beloved sons were featured in it (half of it coz it shares the limelight with another EJ).

Field Trip to Chiangmai (Part 2)

Filed under: Uncategorized — carnationzky @ 3:37 am

(It seems a pity not to continue this. Actually I’ve written this since last 1 Sept yet and it is only now that I remember …)

nice umbrellas, all handmade!

Next stop was the umbrella factory in Bo Sang. We did some shopping there while some had on the spot painting on their slacks and bags. That was quite exciting and the artists were so talented. It was a nice set-up and it helps people with talent to earn some income. We smelt some nicely brewing coffee so we followed it and found a small coffee shop just outside. We had a short coffee break and rested before we set off to Doi Suthep. It was nearly 5 pm. We felt so tired already and we were glad for the long drive up to Doi Suthep so we could sleep. However our sleep was interrupted once in a while by our guide who would tell us what was on the left or on the right when we passed some interesting site. So we had to wake up again.

Anyway, we got to Doi Suthep and it was amazing to see the view of the city from the top. In addition, there were so many photo opps for those who still have a full load of their camera batteries. It was also nice since we went there a bit later in the afternoon, and after the rain, so it was cool. It was so different from the hot and balmy weather of the city, and it could get quite peaceful if there are no visitors roaming around. A soothing music was playing so that helped a bit. We used the cable car in going up and down as we did not have that much energy to use the hundreds of steps. The cable car we used the first time I went there, nearly 20 years ago, was different as it was open and we could see the view while going up. And then since we were still young then, we used the steps to go back down.

We left Doi Suthep after a few minutes of waiting for our bus. While waiting the vendors selling paintings, silver and other Thai stuff milled around us trying to make a sale. One could really get a good bargain if one knows how. For e.g. the final price of a simple silver necklace was between 80 to 100 baht from the original quoted price of 200 baht. As we left Doi Suthep, our trip leader, Ms. Uma kept saying that the next activity after our buffet supper was the Night Bazaar tour, and that we should not forget to interview the vendors and tourists about Chiangmai and any relevant topic for our training. Oh well, that’s true. I am sure those in the Chiangmai case study groups had a very fruitful time collecting data and information! I am sure also that they and all of us were able to obtain much more than that as we had nearly 2 hours there. We had to hurry through our buffet supper so that we could maximize our time at the NB.

Then time for the flight back to Bangkok. We were sort of rejuvenated by the NB activity so we did not really feel tired at all. We arrived back at AIT at nearly 1 am the following day.
